Medicare in St. Augustine

What St. Augustine residents should know

St. Augustine is the St. Johns County seat, and 26.9 percent of its residents were 65 or older in the 2020 census. The hospital in town is UF Health Flagler Hospital on Health Park Boulevard. It was called Flagler Hospital until UF Health bought the system in September 2023, so older letters and plan directories may still use the old name. For larger cases, many residents go north to Jacksonville for Mayo Clinic, Baptist or UF Health Jacksonville.

That name change is worth a quick check. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, search the current directory for UF Health Flagler Hospital and for your own doctors by name. Plan networks can shift when a hospital joins a new system. A Medicare Supplement avoids that question. Plan G or Plan N works with any provider in the country who accepts Medicare. You pay a monthly premium for that freedom and add a separate Part D plan for drugs.

Veterans have a VA clinic in town. The Leo C. Chase VA Clinic sits on Deerfield Preserve Boulevard. VA care and Medicare are separate. Many veterans keep Part B so they can also see community doctors at UF Health Flagler or in Jacksonville. Bring your VA details to a review and we will show how each option fits.

For local help, the St. Johns County Council on Aging runs River House on Marine Street. Call 904-209-3655. Its Sunshine Bus serves the city and county at 904-209-3716. The Main Branch Library on North Ponce de Leon Boulevard has free computers for Medicare.gov and Social Security tasks. For free, unbiased Medicare counseling, call Florida SHINE at 1-800-963-5337.

Common questions

Medicare questions from St. Augustine

Is Flagler Hospital the same as UF Health Flagler Hospital?
Yes. UF Health bought Flagler Health+ in September 2023, and Flagler Hospital became UF Health Flagler Hospital. Search plan directories under the new name.
Does Medicare work with my VA care?
Yes, but they are separate. The VA does not bill Medicare, and Medicare does not pay for VA care. Many veterans keep Part B so they can also see community doctors.
When can I change my St. Augustine Medicare plan?
Anyone with Medicare can switch during Annual Enrollment, October 15 to December 7. If you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you get one more change during Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment, January 1 to March 31.
