Medicare Plans
Part D Drug Plans in Jacksonville, FL
Part D drug plans in Jacksonville FL are sold by private insurers, and the plan with the lowest premium is frequently the priciest option once you factor in what you actually take each month.
There's really one honest way to shop it: run your prescriptions, dose, and pharmacy through every formulary we can access. We do this every fall for clients filling scripts along San Jose Boulevard, Atlantic Boulevard, and everywhere between Mandarin and the Beaches.
- Priced against your actual medications, not the sticker premium
- Preferred pharmacy status can swing your cost either way
- Formularies reset every January 1
- Extra Help can cut costs for lower incomes
- Florida-Licensed Advisor
- Local Help in Duval, Clay & St. Johns
- No-Cost Plan Checkup

Let's price your whole year, not just the premium
Send us your medication list and the pharmacy you use. We run the total cost, premium, deductible, and every expected copay, across the Part D plans we represent and call you with real numbers.

The basics
Four factors that set your real cost
The formulary
Every plan sticks to its own drug list. Off the list means full retail or a formal exception request. The tier
Drugs land on tiers, from preferred generics up to specialty. The same medication can sit two tiers apart between plans. The pharmacy
A preferred pharmacy beats a standard one on price. Filling the same script on the Southside versus Orange Park can change your copay.
Shopping
How we actually price a Part D plan
- 1
Write down every prescription
Dosage, frequency, all of it. Bring bottles or a pharmacy printout, since guesswork is where the mistakes start.
- 2
Tell us your pharmacy
Wherever you fill today, plus whether mail order works for you. Preferred status matters as much as which plan you pick.
- 3
Look at the full-year total
Premium, deductible, and every expected copay added up across twelve months, never the monthly premium by itself.
- 4
Check it again each fall
Tiers and formularies flip every January 1. A plan that fit last year can miss badly this year.
Watch out
Penalties, coverage gaps, and help paying
Go 63 days or longer without creditable drug coverage after you first qualify, and Medicare tacks a late enrollment penalty onto your Part D premium for good. It looks small monthly and adds up over a retirement, and it's among the costliest mistakes we see.
Lower-income residents may qualify for Extra Help, which trims or wipes out Part D premiums and deductibles. Local aging services can walk you through the application; see our Jacksonville senior resources page.
Coverage from a job or the VA may count
Creditable coverage through an employer, TRICARE, or the VA generally avoids the penalty. Hold onto the yearly creditable-coverage letter your plan sends.
Advantage plans usually bundle Part D
Already on a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage built in? Adding a standalone Part D plan on top can knock you off that Advantage plan entirely.
- Enroll as soon as you're eligible to sidestep a permanent penalty
- Standalone Part D goes with Medigap, not most Advantage plans
- Ask about generics before agreeing to a specialty tier
- Recheck your plan every Annual Open Enrollment
Cost stages
Deductible, copays, and the annual cap
| Stage | What happens | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Deductible | Some plans charge a deductible before cost sharing kicks in; others skip it on lower tiers. | A $0 deductible plan isn't automatically the cheaper pick, look at the tier copays behind it. |
| Initial coverage | You pay a copay or coinsurance per fill while the plan covers the rest. | Tier placement is what drives this. One drug, two plans, two very different tiers. |
| Catastrophic / annual cap | Once your out-of-pocket spending hits the yearly limit, covered drugs cost nothing the rest of the year. | This matters most if you're on a specialty or brand-only medication. |
The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan
You can now spread out-of-pocket drug costs across the months instead of paying a large chunk at the counter early in the year. Your total cost doesn't drop, it just spreads out. Worth asking about if a January refill has ever stung. Sign-up runs through your drug plan, and we can walk you through it.
Every fall
Your yearly medication check-in
From October 15 to December 7, every Part D plan can change its premium, deductible, formulary, tier placement, and pharmacy network. Your own prescriptions shift too. What was the cheapest plan for you last January can quietly turn into one of the priciest.
Each fall we re-run your current medication list against every plan we represent and tell you straight whether staying put or switching saves more over the full year. If staying wins, we say so. See Annual Open Enrollment for the exact dates.
