Getting started
Turning 65 Jacksonville FL: Your Medicare Timeline
Turning 65 in Jacksonville FL starts a countdown whether you're ready or not. Medicare opens a seven-month window around your birthday: three months before, your birthday month, and three months after. That's your chance to lock in Part A and Part B.
File early, in the three months before your birthday, and your coverage kicks in on day one of your birthday month. Wait, and there's a gap. That's why we ask Riverside, San Marco, and Mandarin clients to sit down with us at 64 and a half, not 65.

Timeline
A month-by-month plan, not a scramble
- 1
3 to 6 months out
Figure out if you'll start Part B right away or hold off because you're still covered through a job. Pull together your doctor list and your medications.
- 2
3 months before
File for Part A and Part B through Social Security if benefits haven't started yet. Already collecting Social Security? Your card shows up on its own.
- 3
2 months before
Pick your lane: Original Medicare paired with Medigap and Part D, or a Medicare Advantage plan. Check which pharmacies and doctors are actually in network before you sign anything.
- 4
1 month before
Get your paperwork in so cards land before your start date. Double-check your old coverage doesn't end early and leave a hole.
- 5
Right after your birthday
A six-month Medigap window opens the day Part B starts. This is the only stretch where a health condition can't get you turned down, so don't sit on it.
Still working?
A paycheck past 65 changes the plan
Plenty of folks around Jacksonville, whether at CSX, NAS Jacksonville, JAXPORT, or one of the hospital systems, keep working well past 65. If that employer plan covers 20 or more workers, you can typically put off Part B with no penalty and stay on the job's coverage. Most people still grab Part A, since it usually costs nothing, unless you're funding an HSA, because signing up for any piece of Medicare shuts that down.
Once the job ends, an eight-month Special Enrollment Period opens for Part B. COBRA doesn't stretch that window, and neither does retiree coverage. Getting this wrong is one of the priciest errors we see, and you can run the numbers yourself with our Part B penalty calculator.
Smaller employers work differently
Below 20 employees, Medicare typically becomes your primary coverage at 65, and putting off Part B can leave real gaps. Check with HR before you decide anything.
Choosing
Two paths once you're in
- Original Medicare + Medigap + Part D: any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare, a steadier bill, higher monthly premium
- Medicare Advantage: lower premium upfront, a defined network, copays per visit, often includes dental and vision
- Either path still requires your monthly Part B premium
- An independent local agent can lay both out side by side at no charge

Let's confirm your exact enrollment dates
Our advisors pin down your window, check whether your job's coverage lets you delay Part B safely, and walk through both coverage paths. No charge, no pressure to sign anything.
