Medicare Plans
Medicare Advantage vs Supplement Jacksonville: Which Fits You
Nearly every Jacksonville senior we talk to is weighing the same two roads: a Medicare Advantage plan that folds everything into one low-premium private policy, or a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy that sits behind Original Medicare and pays what Medicare doesn't.
Neither wins on paper alone. What matters is your doctors, your prescriptions, how often you travel or head north for the summer, and how much monthly cost you'd trade for predictability.
- Two different ways to cover the gaps in Original Medicare
- Network access at Baptist Health and UF Health Jacksonville is the local deciding factor
- Premiums are only half the cost picture

Local networks
What this looks like at Jacksonville hospitals
Medigap: no network at all
If a provider takes Original Medicare, your Medigap plan follows along. That covers Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville, UF Health Jacksonville, Ascension St. Vincent's and Mayo Clinic Florida on San Pablo Road, plus specialists in Gainesville, Miami or out of state, with no referrals needed.Advantage: the network is the plan
Jacksonville Advantage plans split on which system they contract with. Some lean heavily into Baptist Health, others build around UF Health Jacksonville or Ascension St. Vincent's. Networks get rewritten every January, so last year's answer may not hold.Drug coverage works differently
Advantage plans typically build Part D right in. With Medigap you buy a standalone Part D plan and can shop it separately every fall, often the cheaper route if your medications are expensive.
Choose Advantage if
When a Medicare Advantage plan makes sense
- You want the lightest possible monthly premium, often $0 beyond Part B
- Your doctors and preferred hospital already sit inside the plan's Jacksonville network
- Extras like dental, vision, hearing and gym membership matter to you
- You're fine with copays as you use care and a capped worst-case year
- You stick close to Duval, Clay or St. Johns County for routine care
Choose Medigap if
When a Medicare Supplement makes sense
- You'd rather pay one predictable premium than copays at every visit
- You see multiple specialists, or split your year between Jacksonville and another state
- You want to keep any doctor who accepts Medicare, with no referrals required
- You're mid-treatment and per-service copays would pile up fast
- You're inside your 6-month Medigap open enrollment window and can skip health questions
The timing detail that catches people off guard
You can join or change an Advantage plan each fall during Open Enrollment. Moving back to a Medigap plan later can require passing Florida underwriting. Weigh that asymmetry before you commit the first time.
Total cost
Look at the full year, not just the premium
A $0-premium Advantage plan isn't actually free. Add up realistic copays for primary care, specialists, imaging and any planned procedure, then stack that against a year of Medigap premiums plus a standalone drug plan. For a healthy 66-year-old, the Advantage math often wins. For someone managing a chronic condition with frequent specialist visits, Medigap frequently costs less over twelve months.
We run that math using your actual drug list and doctors. Start with the Medicare checklist, or read the mistakes to avoid before you sign anything.
